The MytA Slow, Sovereign Death to the Subscription Era

Over the past year, as generative AI has proven its ability to write highly functional code, a sensational narrative has taken hold in tech circles: the impending "SaaSapocalypse." Pundits warn of a sudden, catastrophic market crash where AI agents render the Software-as-a-Service industry obsolete overnight, bursting the subscription-economy bubble in spectacular fashion. Unfortunately many, with a lot to lose, have bought into that narrative.

But enterprise technology rarely dies in cinematic explosions. Instead, what we are witnessing is, in my personal opinion, the beginning of a slow, drawn-out death of sorts.

The executioner isn't a single, omnipotent AI replacing all software tomorrow, even if Anthropic try their very best. It is the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), armed with AI tooling, slowly waking up to a new (old) reality. For the first time in a decade, the "build vs. buy" equation has flipped, allowing businesses to finally cure themselves of a chronic financial disease: the death by a thousand SaaS bills.

The OPEX Trap: Death by a Thousand SaaS Bills

To understand the slow demise of the SaaS golden age, we must look at the financial bleeding of the modern SME. For years, the default answer to any operational hurdle was simple: "There's an app for that." Need a CRM? Buy Salesforce. Need to track projects? Rent Jira. Need to handle HR? Pay for Workday. Need them to talk to each other? Buy Zapier.

What began as a push for digital efficiency quickly metastasized into a crippling Operational Expenditure (OPEX) nightmare. Today, mid-market companies use dozens, sometimes hundreds, of disparate SaaS applications. They pay punitive, per-seat monthly licenses for generalised software, often utilising barely 20% of the features they are actually charged for.

Worse, businesses are forced to contort their unique internal workflows to fit the rigid constraints of off-the-shelf software. SMEs have become digital tenant farmers, perpetually renting the tools required to run their own companies, entirely at the mercy of their SaaS landlords' annual price hikes.

The AI Catalyst: The Return of Internal Engineering

Historically, the defense for this OPEX bloat was straightforward: Building it yourself is too expensive. Hiring a dedicated team of software engineers, product managers, and UI designers to build bespoke internal tools was a luxury reserved for tech giants and Fortune 500 companies. It was simply cheaper to pay the SaaS tax.

AI tooling has violently disrupted that calculus.

With the proliferation of AI coding assistants, like Cursor, GitHub Copilot, AntiGravity, Claude, and advanced large language models, the productivity of a single developer has multiplied exponentially. AI handles boilerplate code, debugs in real-time, and accelerates the scaffolding of complex databases. The time barrier to entry for creating secure, robust, and highly customised internal software has plummeted.

Because of this immense leverage, SMEs can now justify investing in their own internal engineering teams. A lean pod of AI-augmented developers can spin up bespoke internal tools in hours, days or weeks; outputting the volume of work that would have required a massive development commitment just five years ago.

Shifting the Ledger: Trading Rent for Shorterm Tokens

Naturally, moving away from SaaS isn't a magical, zero-cost transition. The OPEX doesn't simply disappear; it shifts. To run self-made tools, businesses must take on the hosting requirements, paying for cloud providers (AWS, Azure, GCP), database storage, and API usage, alongside the salaries of their internal engineers.

You are trading a vendor's per-seat invoice for a cloud compute bill, and tokens. But here is the critical difference: cloud infrastructure scales linearly with actual usage, whereas SaaS pricing scales punitively with headcount; and can dramatically alter the landscape for a growing SME. Furthermore, shifting this spend means investing in proprietary assets rather than watching cash vanish into a vendor's profit margin. You are no longer renting; you are building equity in your own operational engine.

SMEs would be best placed allowing their teams to dedicate specific time/tokens for these efforts. They win two-fold: teams get hands on with the latest tooling, and real things come from it. It can be used as the safer natural path to a fully agentic SDLC in your engineering teams.

The Ultimate Prize: Sovereignty

Cost savings, however, are just a secondary benefit. The true driver of this slow migration is the pursuit of sovereignty. When an SME trades rented software for self-made tools, it buys back control over its operational destiny. For a growing business, this digital sovereignty manifests in three vital competitive advantages:

  • Flexibility: Legacy SaaS platforms are built for the lowest common denominator to appeal to the widest market. When you own the code, your engineering team can build exactly what you need, exactly how you need it. The software bends to the business, not the other way around. There is no feature bloat, and custom integrations can be deployed in days rather than waiting years for a vendor's product roadmap. Engineering teams can dispense with the ceremony often driven by these SaaS products.
  • Adaptability: Markets shift rapidly, and SMEs survive by being nimble. Rigid SaaS platforms often become bottlenecks during a strategic pivot, requiring messy, gaffer-taped workarounds. Owned, self-hosted software allows a business to adapt its digital nervous system in real-time. If the business model changes on a Tuesday, internal systems can be refactored, and deployed, by Friday.
  • Agency: Sovereignty ultimately means absolute agency over your data, your security, and your future. The SaaS model relies heavily on lock-in, making it intentionally difficult to extract data or leave their ecosystem. By building internally, SMEs keep their data siloed in a secure environment they control. They are immune to the sudden price gouging that follows SaaS acquisitions, arbitrary UI updates that confuse staff, or the catastrophic risk of a vendor sunsetting a critical product.

The Mechanics of the Slow Death

This brings us back to why there will be no fiery SaaSapocalypse. Ripping out entrenched enterprise software takes time. Data gravity is heavy, and no CTO is going to cancel their entire tech stack on a Monday morning.

Instead, the execution of the SaaS industry will happen one renewal cycle at a time.

It will, and already is, starting at the edges. An SME will look at a niche inventory tool costing them 40,000 GBP a year and realise their internal, AI-empowered dev team can replicate its core functionality over a week. They will hit "cancel." Next quarter, they will replace their automation middleware. Eventually, they will stop upgrading to "Enterprise" tiers of their remaining tools, opting to build custom internal layers on top of cheap, foundational artefact management systems instead.

It won't be an explosion, it will be a quiet, methodical process of businesses taking back control. Driven by AI, the future of the SME is not about stringing together the most subscriptions; it is about building it, owning it, and securing the sovereignty to write your own operational destiny.
